DN: Hundratals döda i Slovjansk
Despite Denials, All Evidence For Deadly Explosion Points To Kyiv
“On June 2 an explosion ripped through the Luhansk state administration building.
Before anyone knew what had happened, graphic video from the scene began to appear online. A dazed woman with her legs blown off and seemingly near death stared blankly into a camera amid rubble and lifeless bodies.
Just as soon, rumors began to spread about what had taken place.
As is happening more and more frequently, both the pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian sides were quick to latch onto stories that fit comfortably into their narrative of events on the ground.
Separatist supporters reported almost immediately that the attack came from a Ukrainian fighter jet.
From Ukrainian officials, the denials were swift. ”The most likely cause of the explosion was careless and inept handling of small arms and explosives,” Oleksandr Dmytrashevskyy, a Ukrainian military spokesman, told RFE/RL’s Ukrainian Service.”

NATO Chief Says Russia Must ‘Respect’ Georgia’s Turn To West
“NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says Russia must accept Georgia’s decision to pursue greater integration with the military alliance and the EU.
”The people of Georgia have chosen the path that leads toward [the] European Union and NATO membership,” Rasmussen told reporters in Brussels on June 4 during a two-day summit of NATO defense ministers. ”That is their sovereign choice. We respect it. So should Russia.”
Earlier in the day, the NATO-Georgia Commission met and discussed Russia’s ”illegal annexation” of Ukraine’s Crimea, Rasmussen said.
He said officials at the meeting did not discuss a timetable for a possible action plan on Georgia’s eventual membership in NATO.
Rasmussen said NATO foreign ministers later this month will address progress reports for Georgia and other nations seeking membership.
Earlier, Rasmussen praised Georgia’s efforts to reform its military.
He said Georgia has made ”good progress, especially in making the defense and security sectors more transparent and accountable.” http://www.rferl.org/content/nato-chief-lauds-georgian-military-reform-efforts/25409625.html

The Moscow Times: Ukraine Government Claims Heavy Rebel Losses in Slovyansk Clash
“Government forces pressed on with an offensive in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday, claiming they had inflicted heavy losses on separatist fighters, though this was denied by the rebels.
A spokesman for Kiev’s ”anti-terrorist operation” said more than 300 rebel fighters had been killed and about 500 wounded in fierce fighting in the past 24 hours in and around the city of Slovyansk, a strategically located separatist stronghold.
Government forces used aircraft, helicopters and artillery in a fierce attack to try to root out the separatists who have controlled Slovyansk and surrounding areas since early April.
But the rebels on Wednesday denied the government’s casualty figures. ”Reports of 300 dead are not true. Losses to the Ukrainian side were more than ours,” Aleksander Boroday, ”prime minister” of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, said, Interfax reported.
Describing the fighting as ”heavy”, the government forces spokesman, Vladyslav Seleznyov, said two servicemen had been killed and 45 wounded.
Fighting was continuing in Slovyansk region and mopping-up operations were underway in the nearby town of Krasny Liman, which he said government forces had taken control of on Tuesday.
President-elect Petro Poroshenko ordered the resumption of operations by government forces to quell the rebellion by pro-Russian militia in the Russian-speaking east soon after scoring a resounding victory in an election on May 25.
The Kiev government says the fighting is being stirred up by Moscow, which opposes its pro-Western course. Kiev also accuses Russia of letting volunteer fighters cross into Ukraine to fight alongside the rebels. Moscow denies this and is urging Ukraine to end military operations and open dialogue with the separatists.” Läs hela artikeln på http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/ukraine-government-claims-heavy-rebel-losses-in-slovyansk-clash/501558.html
ITAR-TASS: Russia not to get involved in senseless confrontations with West
“Russia is not going to build anti-western constructions and get involved in senseless confrontations only for the sake of providing us and NATO with desirable enemy image, Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said.
The policy of limiting Russia’s capabilities is conducted mostly not by European powers, but by the United States, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a meeting of Russia’s council for international affairs.
“The oddest thing is that all this is happening contrary to the obvious and objective benefit the pooling of technologies, resources and human capital might yield for both parts of the European continent,” Lavrov said.
In his opinion this contradiction stems from the fact that the policy of restricting Russia’s capabilities is led not by the European powers but in the first place by the United States.”
An idea to make the historic West a stronghold managing the world economy appears to be a very dangerous illusion, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov added.
“In any event, a concept of turning the historic West into a stronghold for managing the world economy and performing the functions of a global police officer is a dangerous illusion,” he said. “It is dangerous because attempts to put it into practice could undermine the world stability rather than the possibility of this idea becoming reality, as in the modern interdependent world it’s unreal to build certain oases of well-being and security fenced off from the outer world.
“Many analysts in Russia, the European Union and in the United States have been stressing the fact that the Americans are out to prevent the unification of potentials of Russia and the United States, in the first place, guided by the tasks of preserving their own global leadership,” Lavrov said. “Immanuel Wallerstein wrote just recently about the nightmare of the Paris-Berlin-Moscow axis nightmare that keeps haunting Washington politicians.”
Russia is not going to “swallow” another wave of offensive against its national interests, Sergei Lavrov emphasized.
“In recent days, it has become particularly clear that a choice has been made in favor of intensifying actions designed to “discard” Russia.
“They had made their choice long before the Ukrainian crisis broke out: suffice it to remember such landmarks in unwinding the anti-Russian spiral as ‘the Magnitsky Act’ and accusations of our support for Iran and later Syria. The very fact of preparations for the Sochi Olympics has become a pretext for spurring up anti-Russian propaganda in proportions that have nothing to do with sober sense or elementary decency,” the Russian foreign minister went on to say.
“Ukraine has become a frontier beyond which “compressing a spring” further is no longer possible. We have warned our Western colleagues many times that it is impossible to sway the fragile internal political situation in Ukraine and warned about the extremely serious consequences of creating a seat of instability in Europe. Nevertheless, they grossly interfered in the internal affairs in Ukraine; they orchestrated and supported an anti-constitutional coup with the help of ultra-nationalist and neo-Nazi forces,” Lavrov stressed.
There is a widely spread believe that these considerations largely determined the United States’ initiative on creating a trans-Atlantic trading and investment partnership.
“Cutting ropes and shutting lids is no good in relations between Russia and the West for us and for them,” Lavrov said. “However, it is clear that there can be no return to the previous model of relations, filled with double standards and insincere towards Russia.”
Lavrov expressed the hope that the current crisis will serve as a sort of refreshing thunderstorm that would make it possible, although not instantly, to shift relations with the western partners to a more sound and honest basis.”
“Possibly, there will be less painful discussions about the search for common values and more recognition of each other’s right to be different, more striving for building relations on the solid basis of equality and mutual respect for each other’s interests,” Lavrov said.” http://en.itar-tass.com/world/734760
